Ronne Airport Mini Guide
Why am I Going to Bornholm?
It’s acknowledged to be one of the most beautiful parts of Denmark, even though it is closer to
Poland,
Germany and
Sweden than the country it belongs to. Otherwise known as the ‘Pearl of the Baltic’, the island is said to have an unusual light meaning that it has been a haunt of famous artists over the centuries. Touring the island, you’ll come to towns and villages that seen to have been fixed in a time long ago. The island is home to the third largest forest in Denmark and is renowned for the beauty of the sunrise over the sea at Gudjhem. Add to that its miles of perfect beaches with the finest white sand you’ll see east of the Caribbean and you’ll see why it’s the favourite holiday destination of Scandinavians.
So how do I get There?
The town of Ronne on the south west tip of the island has its own airport with seasonal holiday charter flights from Mediterranean destinations and year round scheduled flights from
Copenhagen and several other Scandinavian cities. To get there from the
UK, it’s best to fly by budget carrier into Copenhagen and get a connecting flight. Once at Bornholm Airport it’s recommended that you hire a car as the island cries out to be explored.
What is Bornholm Airport Like?
It’s unfortunate that for a beautiful island, the airport looks a little like a prison block. It’s small and the main part of the terminal building is more like an aircraft hangar. Once inside though it doesn’t seem crowded because of the small number of flights that use the airport.
What can I Expect When I Disembark at Bornholm?
You’ll have to walk to the terminal building from the aircraft steps so if you need assistance in doing so, let your airline know well in advance so that someone can be on hand to assist. Once inside the terminal, passport control is cursory as most flights are internal and you’ll soon be at the baggage carousel waiting for your luggage. As the planes that fly there are quite small, you shouldn’t have to wait long to reclaim your bags. Once past customs, you’ll be in the arrivals hall. If you need any help, you’ll need to ask a member of staff as there’s no dedicated passenger information desk. The staff are informative and friendly so your questions should soon be answered.
If you’ve pre-booked a Rhino hire car to ensure you get the choice of vehicle you want then you can’t miss the desks in the corner as you exit customs. There are a couple of ATMs around the airport should you need cash but no facilities for currency exchange. Buses and taxis are available from outside the airport with bus routes 3 and 5 being the ones tourists generally use. You can look up schedules and routes at www.bat.dk
What can I Expect on the day of my Departure?
After a quick check in you’ll find that there are no shops apart from a small outlet selling newspapers, drinks and snacks. There is however, a restaurant serving decent meals should you be hungry before your flight. Even after security you’ll find no duty free shop as the airport mainly serves domestic routes. You can spend the time waiting for your flight on the airport’s Wi-Fi system although there is a small fee for the service.
Ronne Airport is also known as Bornholm Airport. This small airport has been operating since before World War II but now it is a fully modern passenger airport which has its own webcam. Ronne Airport is operated by Statens Luftfartsvæsen but Naviair does all of its air traffic control.
Ronne Airport serves the island of Bornholm where we also offer rental vehicles. Having car hire Ronne Airport is the most recommended way of travelling around Denmark as it gets very cold in the winter. Even in the summer you may often find the climate a bit chilly for public transport.
