Useful things to know about Macau
An autonomous region on China’s south coast, Macau is a short ferry crossing from Hong Kong over the Pearly River Delta and attracts millions of tourists each year to its casinos. Gambling in Chinas is illegal, however Macau is the exception and is frequently referred to as the Las Vegas of the East. Attracting over 30 million visitors a year, mainly from the East and primarily from mainland China, it offers legal gambling in China.
Can you rent a car in Macau?
Yes, you can rent a car in Macau, however it’s not a popular location for private car rental and as such only Avis of the world’s recognized car rental agents have an outlet here. At just 5km from its southern edge to the border with China to the north, there is little need to rent a car. If you are staying at any of the main casinos you can take advantage of the free shuttle services offered to get around Macau and see the sights.
Should you rent a car in Macau?
Probably not, driving in Macau is best left to local and professional drivers. Whilst private car rental is possible and Avis offer a recognized international brand, unless familiar with local roads and driving laws in China, it’s unlikely that renting a car in Macau will offer any real benefits. If you do want to get around my private car, you might want to consider a private car tour guide.

Renting a car in Hong Kong and driving to Macau
A new bridge was opened in October 2018 linking Macau, Hong Kong and Zhuhai named the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bristol (HZMB). You can rent a car in Hong Kong and take a private car over the HZMB bridge, however you will need to comply with both driving requirements in Hong Kong and China, so will need to present valid insurance and license documentation as well as other required permits for international visitors driving in China.
