Fort Myers Airport Mini Guide
Why Would I fly to Fort Myers?
If you’re fed up with cold damp weather then Fort Myers is the place for you, nearly a year round destination it has a near perfect climate with only the occasional hurricane to spoil things. The city is crawling with history too. From the Seminole Wars fought against the local Native Americans to the homes of Edison and Ford, it’s bursting at the seams with exhibits of their inventions, you’ll find something for everyone. In winter, the sunny mild climate makes it perfect for outdoor sports such as cycling, fishing and golf.
How do I get to Fort Myers?
You’ll need to fly into Southwest Florida Airport, under thirty minutes from the city. All but one of the flights come from US and Canadian cities but there’s a European flight from
Dusseldorf which makes for an easy connection for
UK travellers. Alternatively, fly into
Washington or
New York and connect there. It’s a straightforward journey into the city by the number 50 bus or you can take a taxi or hire a car.
What’s the Airport Like?
It’s big and busy and is ranked as one of the busiest single runway airports in the US handling over 7.5m passengers last year. It’s only reasonably modern looking despite being built only six years ago to award winning acclaim but stretches out over a large area with a central terminal area and three concourses. Facilities are good and the airport ranks high on customer satisfaction with the airport experience.
What can I Expect When I Land at Southwest Florida Airport?
First you’ll have the luxury of getting off the plane along a gangway to the terminal and then have a short walk to the main terminal. Before entering the public area you’ll have to go through security and passport controls. The concourses have their own shops for arriving and departing customers as well as some places to eat. In the main terminal building you’ll find the airport information desk as well as a visitor information desk manned by local volunteers. They can advise on things for the tourist to see and do around Fort Myers whilst the main information desk deals with travel related enquiries.
For cash at the airport you’ll need to visit the Travelex branch on the second floor. Transport into the city by bus can be found directly outside the terminal whilst the car hire companies are found on the ground floor of the parking garage so you’ll have to exit the terminal and cross the road to gain access.
And What About on my Journey Home?
Once you’ve dropped off your luggage and picked up your tickets you’ll have time to browse the dozens of shops at the airport. Most of the shops sell holiday necessities like paperbacks, beach wear and sunglasses plus there’s a PGA golf shop there too. For something to eat, there’s a range of cafes and restaurants so you can grab anything from a bagel to a cinnamon bun and coffee or spend your last remaining dollars on a three course meal in one of the elegant restaurants there. After your meal you can settle down with your laptop and access the free Wi-Fi to check emails or browse the internet.
