Oujda Angads Airport Mini Guide

The Eastern Most Part of Morocco
Oujda Airport lies 7km north of the city of Oujda, which is around 15km from the border with Algeria. It is also 600km north east of Casablanca – how about hiring a car at Oujda Airport and returning it to Casablanca after a holiday touring the area between the two cities?

Oujda Angads Airport

Small but Still International
Originally a US military airfield during World War II, Oujda Airport is a very small airport but still handles almost three thousand passengers a week on around 30 aircraft. It flies to Algiers and Casablanca, plus several northern European destinations, the major airline being Royal Air Maroc.

The Area Around Oujda
A historic city, Oujda has become a lot quieter since the border with Algeria was closed in 1994, however, it is still well worth a visit should you be in the east of Morocco.  An area full of music and culture, it where you will hear the best Rai – a kind of local Arabic music.

Oujda View

The Real Morocco
As with many parts of the country, the area around Oujda, whilst used to westerners visiting, does not go out of it's way to especially accommodate them – rather a case of “when in Rome”, however, you will find two hotels in Oujda city - the Ibis and the Atlas Spa and Hotel which are particularly suited to western tastes and where you can get a cooling beer or glass of wine apparently even during Ramadan. Whilst on the subject – please remember to dress accordingly for a visit to a Moslem country, no shorts in religious buildings and women to keep their heads, shoulders and legs covered, just to show some respect to the culture.

To make the most of your stay there it’s best to hire a car when you arrive at the airport and then spend a day or so in the city, shopping in the jewellery and leather shops for which the city is renowned or visiting the Sidi Yahya oasis around which the city first developed.

Once you’ve tired of the city, head out into the surrounding countryside, for there, surprisingly, there are many orchards watered by the abundant oases that dot the area. Finally, further afield is a part of the Mediterranean coast rarely visited by tourists.
