Apart from Mexicans travelling home to see their families, the large majority of visitors to Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo come there for the beach resorts. Whilst many go to the larger resorts such as Cancun
or Puerto Vallarta
the more discerning traveller heads for the smaller resorts like those around Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo.
How Easy is it to get to Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International Airport?
If you’re travelling from North America and Canada
or internally within Mexico then getting there is easy. Travellers from outside of North America will find it more difficult with connections necessary at North American hub airports such as Chicago
. Once you reach the airport, taxis and local buses can take you to the resorts whilst many will have hotel transfers arranged. If you want to get out and explore, it is worth arranging a hire car at the airport when you arrive.
What is the Airport Like?
Despite being a medium airport, there are a reasonable range of facilities at the airport. Catering for discerning North American passengers, the airport is clean and modern and well organised. There are several shops including a duty free shop with a wide range of tequila amongst other goods. There’s a Mexican fashion outlet and a general store selling books, newspapers and packaged snacks. La Hacienda is a good café selling hot and cold food as well as drinks including beers, and coffee. Wi-Fi is available at the airport and if you need banking facilities you’ll find a currency exchange office and an ATM.
