Osaka Kansai Airport Mini Guide
Why am I Travelling to Kansai Airport?
Previously if you wanted to get to Osaka you would fly into Osaka Airport which is closer to the city. Vast overcrowding led the authorities to open Kansai in the 90s to ease congestion. Since then, streamlining of each airport has led to Osaka receiving only domestic flights whilst international arrivals have to use Kansai.
Is Kansai Airport Easy to Reach?
Few international airports in Japan receive flights from Europe but Kansai is one of them. Unfortunately for UK passengers the only European flight leaves from Paris Charles de Gaulle so you’ll need to hop over the channel at the start of your journey. Once at Kansai, the journey into Osaka is quick and easy along the Sky Gate Bridge. It’s practically impossible to get lost and you’ll also get the stunning vista of Osaka Bay as you make your way in.
What’s the Airport Like?
It’s virtually indestructible having survived the Kobe earthquake and a typhoon which blasted it with 120 mph winds. The terminal is the world’s longest being 1.8km end to end and this distance is shortened by the rapid people mover that spans the building. The design is quite unique too with the roof shape designed to help air condition the building.
What are the Facilities Like at Kansai Airport?
The airport has all the usual facilities you’d expect like banks, ATMs, a post office as well as plenty of shops and restaurants. There is also lots for children to do at the airport with and observation deck to see the planes take off and land as well as a kids play room and a park area with play equipment. If you’re feeling stressed, you’ll find a relaxation room and there are even areas where you can have a massage and take a shower. If you’re unwell, there’s a clinic and a dentist for that nagging toothache too. In fact there’s so much at the airport, you could probably live there!
