Munich Train Station Mini Guide
Why do People Take the Train to Munich?
Munich is one of Germany’s busiest railway stations and on the direct fast line from many major cities in the country. If you’ve decided, as many do, to tour the country by train then using Munich Central Station as your arrival point in the city makes perfect sense. Once there, you can hire a car at the station to tour the city and the surrounding countryside before handing your hire car back in and recommencing your rail journey.
What is Munich Central Station Like?
The station is still divided into the three original stations that make up Munich Central Station and each takes trains from different routes. There are 32 lines in total entering and leaving the station with a separate S-Bahn station underneath the main station. The station is huge and changing from one line to another can easily take a fifteen minute walk.
What are the Facilities Like at Munich Central Station?
The facilities are excellent as the station is a clean and well lit transport hub. On different levels you’ll find a complete shopping mall and department stores, food halls, smaller boutiques, cafes and restaurants as well as a bank and several ATMs. Police patrol the station and unlike many in other countries, the station concourse is relatively safe.
- Plans for the future of Munich Railway Station are currently in disarray for a number of reasons. A second S-Bahn route through the station is facing planning delays and is not expected to be completed for another eight years. Work to renovate and replace parts of the main facade have also been put on hold despite all planning being in place and the link to Munich Airport has been abandoned after costs rocketed. For now you'll have to put up with overcrowding and long distances to connections.
