Dusseldorf Weeze Airport Mini Guide

Can you Recommend a Stay in Dusseldorf?
Dusseldorf is an exciting city but also commercially, one of Germany’s busiest. It is found on the River Rhine and plays a big part in celebrations for the Rhenish Carnival each year hosting one of Europe’s most popular fairs which nearly nine million people attend. The city is the centre of Germany’s fashion industry and leading from that it’s a major shopping area for Germans. Young people love Dusseldorf because of its vibrant nightlife and club scene whilst overall the city is ranked in the top ten places to live for quality of life.

Dusseldorf City

How do I get to Dusseldorf?
Dusseldorf is accessible by three airports, Dusseldorf International, the closest, followed by Koln Bonn Airport an hour away and finally, the city’s airport for budget carriers, Weeze Airport. Many flights arrive there each day from Europe and Turkey including several from Ryanair including routes from the UK. Whilst by car the airport is ninety minutes from Dusseldorf, there is quicker access between the airport and city using the Deutsch Bahn train. You may find it preferable to take the train to Dusseldorf and hire one of our cars from there, especially if you are unfamiliar with the roads or arriving at night. A shuttle bus takes you from the airport to the nearest station for the trip. Car hire is another good option as it allows for independent exploration of the region during your stay.

What is the Airport Like?
The airport was converted from a former RAF base in Germany and is one of Europe’s fastest growing airports with nearly three million people using it last year, an increase of nearly 50% on 2010. It has undergone several upgrades since its inception and is a modern and functional airport with a single terminal building.

Dusseldorf Weeze Airport

What Should I do When I Arrive at Weeze?
You will need to descend steps to get off the aircraft at Weeze as there are no jet bridges, so if you have mobility issues, let your airline know well in advance so assistance can be provided. Once in the terminal building you may find queues for passport control at peak times before entering the baggage reclaim area. After retrieving your luggage you’ll enter the arrivals hall and can find the passenger help desk ahead of you. The staff there can answer any airport related questions for you.

Car rental is available and the desks are easy to find against the walls of the arrivals hall. Once you’ve completed the paperwork, you’ll find the cars parked right outside the terminal doors. There too, you'll find the shuttle bus for access to the train to Dusseldorf stops every 30 minutes. For instant cash there’s a cash machine in the arrivals hall for your convenience.

What are the Airport’s Facilities Like for Departing Passengers?
Whilst limited, there is enough to keep you occupied as you wait for your return flight, especially as it often takes some while to get checked in and through security at peak times. The airport has a duty free shop which sells other travel essentials too and a pleasant little restaurant on the top floor called Panorama which serves good food in a setting that’s great for plane spotting.

Weeze is a great airport to choose if considering some time in Holland. It’s right on the border and with a hire car, the south eastern part of the country is easily accessible.

Whilst not renowned as a tourist destination, the area is beautiful with the River Niers flowing through the town on its way to the Meuse. The landscape is flat and crossed by lazy rivers that idle past old farmhouses and even older castles. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to set up an easel and paint the vista before you.
