Baku Mini Guide
Tell me Why I Should Choose Baku?
For a city break, Baku offers the unusual and the wonderful. Oil money has graced it with fabulous architecture and some of the best hotels and restaurants in eastern Europe. You've also got the draw of Formula 1 racing there for the first time in 2016 and, by making use of a Baku hire car, you've got the chance to escape the city and explore the beautiful Caspian Sea region. Convinced yet?
How Easy is it to Get There?
Daily flights from Heathrow Airport with BA and Azerbaijan Airlines means that the city is really easy to get to. Collect your Baku hire car when you arrive at the airport and it's only just over half an hour on the motorway from the airport to the centre. Hotels can range from the eye-wateringly expensive, usually the haunt of oil company executives and oligarchs, to the cheap, cheerful and traditional.
What Should be on my Must See List?
The symbolic building of the city is not one of the new high rise towers but the Maiden Tower that dates back nearly 1400 years. No one knows what it was used for although there are several guesses which include a temple, a beacon and a prison.
Take a short ride out to the 'other-worldly' landscape of Baku's mud volcanoes. Mostly a region of low lying, sulphurous and steamy blow holes, it's a fascinating place to visit.
Artem Island may be where the oil industry began in Azerbaijan but today it's a tranquil retreat that's perfect for an afternoon away from the busy atmosphere of the city – take the little ferry boat out and spend a few hours exploring.
