Is it worth hiring a car in Tenerife?
It depends what you want from your holiday to Tenerife, for those planning to spend their days pool side sipping cocktails, a hire car may not be worth it. However, for most holiday makers to Tenerife there is so much to see and do, hiring a car is very worthwhile investment. Not only will you have access to your own transport to travel where and when you like, you’ll save on expensive taxi fares and guided coach tours. What documents to I need to hire a car in Tenerife?
When hiring a car in Tenerife you will need to bring you driving license, passport, car hire voucher and a valid credit card in the name of the main driver. All car rental agents in Tenerife will require all of these items as a minimum, however you should also check the terms and conditions to check whether your specific rental required further documents. We recommend presenting a ‘driving license check code’ should this be asked for and if your driving license is not in the roman alphabet you may require an international driving license. We advise taking an additional credit card if you have one should your primary card not be accepted for any reason.

Tenerife Mini Guide
Tell me About Tenerife
Tenerife is the largest island in the Canary Islands and a popular holiday destination attracting visitors mostly from the UK
, although the Spanish prefer to visit at Easter. It is known as the ’island of eternal spring’ thanks to its consistently warm climate.
How can I get There?
There are two airports serving the island, Tenerife North and Tenerife South, you can fly into there from mainland Spain
and most cities in Europe. Tenerife is also a hub for inter-island flights and ferries. From the airport you can take a bus or taxi, but the best option is to take advantage of great deal on car hire in Tenerife and drive to really see the whole island.
It’s all About the Beaches and Night-life, Right?
If you are in the south of Tenerife, yes! Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos are purpose built tourist resorts and extremely popular for holidays where sunbathing and drinking are the main activities. There are many places to stay whether you want a 5 star resort or a 2 star self catering apartment you'll have lots of choice. The streets are full of cafes serving English meals or fast food and you can browse the tourist shops to buy souvenirs. Night time of course, the resorts come alive with night clubs and bars that are always busy with young holidaymakers. The only real difference between the two resorts is the colour of the beach – Playa de las Americas has black volcanic sand and Los Cristianos has imported golden sand.
What if I Want to Take the Family?
In Costa Adeje there is something for all the family, it’s not just for the party-goers! There are two water parks, the Siam Parque and Aqualand, both are good for a family day out. Visit Jungle Park in Los Cristianos and see the bird of prey show or take a camel ride at the Camel Park. We have family cars for hire in Tenerife and can cater for all needs.
But I Just Want to Relax!
Maybe it is best to stay in Puerto de la Cruz in the north of Tenerife. It is an old harbour town that has kept its heritage and very different to the resorts in the south. Instead of clubbing, you can sit at a bar in the town square and watch the street entertainment. Playa Jardin is outside of town and the best place to sunbathe or swim. If you like to scuba dive, it is well worth diving around the harbour walls in Puerto de la Cruz or feed the sting rays at Las Galletas. If you visit the city of Santa Cruz, there are museums and art galleries to keep you busy and a large market on a Sunday if you get the urge to shop.
I Heard Tenerife has Lots of Natural Beauty
You should start out at Mount Teide National Park and take a cable car up the volcano - from the top you will see amazing views across the whole island. If you are feeling energetic take a hiking route through the Parque Rural de Anaga. For something less taxing, take a sea cruise and watch out for the dolphins and whales. If you have a hire car in Tenerife, take a drive to the pretty Masca, locally known as the forgotten village due to only recently having an accessible road.
What is the Food Like?
Mostly the food is typically Spanish, try the paella and tortilla. Tacos filled with pork are a popular snack or street food, if you are on the go. The fish is good there but find a nice restaurant in one of the harbour towns for the freshest catch. Visit one of the traditional bars and try tapas, sample a little taste of everything.
Are There any Festivals?
The Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the second largest in the world after Rio Carnival. It lasts between 7 and 10 days with parades, music and lots and lots of parties!

The must-see experience of your holiday is a visit to Spain’s highest mountain, El Teide. The lower slopes are easily reached if you rent a car in Tenerife but be warned though that the height of the mountain means that altitude sickness is common and that several metres of snow fall there in winter, take a trip in the cable car to reach the summit.
