Asturias Airport Mini Guide
Where is Asturias Airport?
Asturias Airport, named after the principality of Spain in which it is located - sits on the northwest coast, just off the Bay of Biscay and it is reportedly the most northerly airport in Spain.
How do I get There?
Flights are predominantly domestic schedules from Spanish cities and islands. There are regular International connections to Belgium
and the UK
. In 2018 Asturias welcomed more than 1.4 million passengers from nine airlines, handling more than 110 tonnes of freight. Despite decreasing passenger numbers because of the economic climate, the airport is trying to maintain regular extension and upgrades of its facilities so you can expect some disruption during your time at the airport.
How can I Make my Onward Journey?
Options for your onward journey are by road, taxi or bus. Local buses run from in front of airport arrivals to nearby cities including Oviedo (province capital), industrial town Aviles and the largest city Gijon
, which also has a port.
Road routes from the airport are good, making car hire a convenient option. If you have hired a car from Rhino, collect it from the car hire desks in arrivals, on the ground floor of the airport terminal. From there onward routes are numerous taking you along the coast or up into the mountains to visit the beautiful surrounding rural parts of northern Spain and beyond!
What can I Find at the Airport?
The airport boasts efficient and comfortable facilities for passengers, alongside interesting displays of local paintings, sculptures and engravings. If hunger or thirst strikes, it should be easy to locate a cafe with one in arrivals, one in departures and one in the public area.
Need some last minute items? Visit Divers, a large shop offering numerous items, including traditional products such as Sidre (cider brewed from local apple groves) or Cabrales, a local cheese. The latter would be an apt souvenir from Asturias which is also called "el país de los quesos” which translates to Land of the Cheeses.
What if I am in Need of Reduced Mobility Support?
With advance notice free support is available, using designated meeting points at the airport depending upon what support is required. There is special parking, access ramps and lifts. Facilities inside the terminal have been adapted too, including toilets, info desks and telephone booths.
