Windsor Airport Mini Guide
What is Windsor all About?
Windsor is an exciting city with one toe almost in the USA
. Found on the Detroit River, immediately opposite the huge American city of Detroit
, you can spend time in Canada and America; just make sure you have your passport or ID card with you for security. The city has a lot of history related to the slave trade with many escaped slaves making their way to Canada by the quickest route ending up there. The city has a link with the Motor City in that Henry Ford set up his Canadian operations there.
How do I get Into Windsor?
The city has a small airport nearby that takes flights from airports in Canada, the US and across the holiday destinations of the Caribbean. No flights arrive there from Europe and travellers from that continent may find it easier to arrive at Detroit Airport
and cross the border. Transport into Windsor is easy with public transport operating routes into the city. You can hire a car at the airport too, allowing you to explore the area around Windsor.
What is the Airport Like?
The airport is small and up until a few years ago was run very inefficiently leading to concerns that it may close. The airport was handed back to the city authorities who asked a consortium to turn it around. They have been very successful in turning the airport’s fortunes around leading to hopes of expansion. Currently, it is also popular with private jets and charters which supplement the small number of commercial flights.
What Should I Expect When my Plane Touches Down?
The airport is compact and easily navigated. There are no jet ways to disembark on so a short walk to the terminal is necessary. Pleasant in summer, the distance is very bracing in the depths of winter. If you need help getting around then you should let your airline know well in advance so assistance can be provided. Rather bizarrely, you won’t see any sign of airport information until you are just about to fly home as it is situated in the departure lounge after security. Whilst the need for help is unlikely, you’ll be able to get help from any of the airport staff in the arrivals hall.
The car hire company desks are also easy to find, directly ahead of you and to the left as you exit arrivals. To get the local bus just go outside the terminal door and the bus stop is immediately apparent. You won’t find a bank at Windsor Airport but there is an ATM for quick cash.
What is the Airport Like for Departing Passengers?
After you’ve passed over your luggage you’ll be looking for ways to occupy your time before your flight takes off. The airport is a little light on facilities with only a small shop selling travel goods, newspapers and magazines. Eating is a little less restrictive with a café serving hot and cold snacks together with a bar serving drinks and even lighter bites. If you don’t want to queue, use the snack vending machines. Wi-Fi is available but you’ll need to pay for it!
Latest Update from Windsor Airport:
- The airport has recently purchased land around the airport to provide the means of future expansion should it be required.
