Vancouver Airport Mini Guide
Vancouver International Airport is situated approximately twelve kilometres from the centre of Vancouver. It’s the second busiest airport in Canada and has been voted the best airport in all of North America. The airports terminals designs are noteworthy and the airport features an extensive collection of Native Art from throughout the Pacific Coast region. The international arrivals hall can boast of its own waterfall while the departures lounge is home to a beautiful bronze sculpture by the artist Bill Reid entitled "The Spirit of Haida Gwaii, The Jade Canoe".
There is a good reason that Vancouver Airport is so highly rated, among its peers. Some of the facilities above and beyond that are available at the airport include a dry cleaners that offers laundry and alteration services, a fully equipped dental practice that does emergency repairs as well as general cleanings and a luggage repair shop that also heels shoes and cuts keys while you wait.
There is even a spa offering manicure and pedicure options, shampoos, blow-drys and hot towel shaves for men. Almost any of the services you can think of (and a few you can’t) are probably available at Vancouver Airport.
Shop Until You Drop!
Shopping at Vancouver Airport, in line with everything else is fantastic. Need something to read while you wait? Check out the Virgin Store or the local favourite the Great Canadian Book Company which sells more than just great Canadian books. For gifts with a Canadian flavour it’s got to be the Thinking Canada store which hosts a wide range of Canadian themed products, from jewellery to toys and a good collection of First Nations art works. If you’re feeling lucky head down to the British Columbia Lottery Ticket centre, located on level 3 before security in the domestic terminal, and who knows you may leave Canada with more than a T-Shirt.
For all of you that are tired of rubbery airplane food, flying from Vancouver Airport will be a dream come true for your stomach. The airport has a special service called “Food on the fly”. All restaurants at the airport participate in the scheme which allows you to order any meal you fancy and have it specially packaged in a flight friendly container that you can take with you to eat on the plane. The choice available is fantastic and there are options to suit every taste from budget fast food to gourmet menus but a word of advice for hamburgers, you have got to try Whitespot. Opened by Nat Bailey on Vancouver’s Granville Street way back in 1928, his fresh and tasty menu and his trademark Triple O Burgers have made the Whitespot chain a household name in British Columbia.
Vancouver Airport is serviced by over 500 licensed taxis, most of which are restricted mobility friendly. There is a rapid rail connection from the Airports own train station to the centre of Vancouver and most of the hotels offer regular shuttle bus services. There is also a public shuttle bus service - the Aeroshuttle which will run you into town for less than twenty dollars. However you get there, Vancouver Airport will not disappoint.
- For the third year in a row, the airport has won the award for 'Best Airport in North America' having just received the 2012 award!
