Klagenfurt Airport Mini Guide
What can you Tell me About Klagenfurt?
Klagenfurt is a sizeable Austrian city and was the home of the composer Gustav Mahler. It’s found on the shores of Lake Worthersee where each year an international beach volleyball tournament takes place. The city is said to have been founded when land was given to a group of peasants who devised a way to kill a dragon that was terrorising the area. Today, a statue of the creature called the ‘Lindwurm’ stands in the city’s main square. A fascinating place to visit in Klagenfurt is the Minimundus, a model village showcasing miniatures of famous monuments and buildings from around the world.
How do I get to Klagenfurt?
Less than two miles from Klagenfurt is a small airport taking flights from Germany
, the UK
and domestic flights. Ryanair operate the Scandinavian and UK routes giving low cost access to the attractions of the city. Transport from the airport into the city is very easy with trains, buses and taxis operating as well as the availability of car hire.
What is the Airport Like?
The airport has a single terminal which is very compact and which can get very crowded when several flights land. Shops and restaurants are found on the upper level above the check in desks and security.
What can I Expect When I Land at Klagenfurt?
Klagenfurt is a little short on facilities to ease the passage of travellers arriving there. You’ll have to walk from your plane to the terminal but the distance is short. Once inside, get through passport checks if you’re coming from outside Austria and you’ll be ready to collect your luggage once it comes off the reclaim belt. In the arrivals hall you can find out more about the airport’s facilities at the information desk or go straight to pick up your pre-booked hire car from the company desks. If you need cash urgently you’re limited to a single cash machine and no banks or exchange facilities. Public transport is obtained easily enough with a train station at the airport plus several bus routes into Klagenfurt and the surrounding towns.
What Can I do at the Airport When it’s Time for me to go Home?
You should allow plenty of time for eating at the airport for the food on offer is exceptional. The restaurant called ‘Balloon’ has fabulous views out over the Karawanken Mountains and whilst enjoying the view, you can sit down to top quality food prepared by one of Austria’s top chefs. If you don’t feel ready for a full meal, there’s a cosy little coffee bar at the airport serving delicious snacks and cakes or a traditional Viennese bakery who will sell you any number of wonderful pastries and a coffee to accompany it. You’ll need less time for shopping as there is just the one travel shop and duty free at Klagenfurt. Still, there’s a wide choice on offer and you’re sure to find something to take home with you.
- Austrian Airlines have laid on an extra daily flight to Vienna this summer. The new flight leaves Klagenfurt at 8.15 for the fifty minute flight. An earlier flight at 7am is available for early birds!
