Mini Guide to St Kilda

Who Travels to St Kilda?
Many people who want to visit Victoria’s capital don’t want the hustle and bustle of the main city so opt for the genteel charms of St Kilda. There you’ll find scenes reminiscent of England in the fifties with spotless streets, still with many of their Victorian features, an amusement park that could have come from Coney Island and a variety of sights exclusive to this neighbourhood of Melbourne. It’s also only a couple of miles drive into downtown Melbourne where you might have only travelled a couple of miles in distance but you’ll have travelled half a century in time.

St Kilda Beach

How do I get to St Kilda?
If you’re travelling within Australia then you’ll be able to choose to fly to Avalon Airport and drive from there. If you’re coming in from overseas then Melbourne International Airport is your point of entry. There’s only a single flight from Europe and that’s with Qantas from London Heathrow so you’ll have to connect there. From the airport, it’s under half an hour to the neighbourhood where you can then kick off your shoes and relax.

St Kilda Luna Park

What’s There to Do in St Kilda?
The neighbourhood has many pretty streets to walk around and if you’re near Fitzroy or Acland Street you can stop off for a drink at one of the many street cafes and watch the very eclectic population wander by.

Everyone goes to the Luna Park, not just for its amusements, which include the oldest wooden track roller coaster in the world, but also for the historic importance of the park which celebrates its centenary this year. Entry is via the universally recognised ‘mouth’ and a good time is certain to be had by all. Finally, St Kilda’s beach is definitely worth a visit. Recognised as the prettiest around Melbourne, it’s often busy at weekends and on public holidays.
