Melbourne Airport Car Hire - Did You Know?

  • It's the second busiest airport in Australia.
  • Originally it was called Tullamarine Airport.
  • It's the only international airport of the four that serve Melbourne.
  • The Melbourne to Sydney route is the 4th busiest route in the world.
  • The airport is multiple award winning and internationally classed as a five star airport.

Melbourne Airport Mini Guide

The Airport
Melbourne Airport is also known as Tullamarine Airport and is the second busiest airport in Australia. It has four terminals, all supplied by ample parking. All parking, with the exception of the long term car park is undercover. Four hotels can be found inside the airport perimeter or close by with the nearest being the Park Royal on top of the multi-storey car park. Last year over 28 million passengers passed through Melbourne Airport, a 7% increase on the previous year. Plans are now being discussed to extend terminal 4 with the need brought about by advanced talks on more budget flights.

How to Get There
34 airlines currently use Melbourne airport, including a number of budget airlines. The busiest route is that from Sydney – in fact it’s the 4th busiest route in the world. Melbourne is a major hub for many of Australia’s airlines.

Getting to Your Destination
There are no trains directly from the airport although the idea was mooted and then rejected. Instead the Skybus Super Shuttle leaves every ten minutes for a 20 minute trip to the central business district via the Southern Cross railway station. From there you can access the city’s metro system and state and national railways. A number of local buses run from the airport to destinations in the city and suburbs. Information on tickets, schedules etc. can be gained from the information desk in the arrivals hall.

Car hire is a good option at Melbourne Airport. The rental companies’ desks are found in the arrivals hall in the domestic terminal. Their main offices can be found on the ground floor of the short stay multi storey car park. If you are collecting a car from the airport it is well worthwhile sending a member of your party through to queue to complete the paperwork whilst others collect luggage. Once out of the airport, access to the city and onward across the state is easy on the City Link toll motorway or the Tullamarine Freeway.

Public Information
There’s an airport information desk in the arrivals hall which deals with travel information as well as general airport information. Disabled travellers needing assistance should ask there too.

Facilities Available
  • There is a branch of ANZ Bank in Terminal 2 which opens 7 days a week as well as a branch of Travelex. There are a number of ATMs spread throughout the airport too.
  • Shopping is excellent at Melbourne Airport with dozens of shops catering for most requirements. There are a number selling just Australian products including fashion and local produce for example, Australian Way. In the departure lounges you’ll find four duty free outlets operated by F1RST Duty Free, selling alcohol, tobacco products, perfumery and gifts.
  • There is a wide range of meal options available at the airport from McDonalds to snack food such as sandwiches and pizza to full meals in restaurants such as the Mexican restaurant, Nando’s or Sushi Sushi. For those wanting something lighter, there are a number of coffee shops and bars in all main areas of the terminals.
  • A first aid facility is available through the Melbourne Airport Health centre. It can be found in the public area just after arrivals.
  • Wi-Fi is available in all terminals on a pay per use basis.

Passenger Who Need Extra Assistance
Travellers with reduced mobility should contact the traveller’s information desk for assistance upon arrival but it is recommended that you inform your airline before travelling so that necessary steps can be taken to assist you.

Latest Update from Melbourne Airport:

07/02/17 – Melbourne airport experienced a huge rise in international passenger numbers during December 2016. This translated to a record number of 952,855 international passengers.

22/04/12 - If you're just intending to use Melbourne as your point of arrival, you'll be interested to hear that several of Australia's low cost airlines want to develop a larger range of budget flights to other Australian airports. Keep up to date with this by following the airport's website. www.melbourneairport.com.au
