About Albury Airport and Surrounding Area
Albury Airport is a small regional airport in the New South Wales region of Australia. It is located just five kilometres from Albury town centre. It’s new terminal opened in October 2009 and serves both Albury and Wodonga Victoria. Over 200 flights a week operate in and out of Albury with passenger numbers increasing year on year over the last decade.
The Albury Wodonga region is well known for its amazing natural beauty. The Murray River snakes through the mountains to the east of the region while fertile river plains add a rich beauty to the east. Situated in the Wiradjuri Country the area has a good economy, excellent medical facilities as well as fantastic sporting facilities and a lively Arts Scene.
Albury Airport is also home to the official regional weather station. The airport has regular connections to
Sydney, twice daily and also has a service to
Melbourne among other destinations and is the second busiest regional airport in the whole of New South Wales.
At The Airport
Small but welcoming (It has a single baggage carousel) Albury Airport has a newly refurbished terminal, an excellent and friendly information desk and a beautiful little cafe called Uiver whose walls are painted with an amazing trompe l'oeil mural depicting the events surrounding the Dutch Airliner. The Mural artist Marc Spijkerbosch was commissioned to create it to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Uliver and it is definitely worth seeing as you sip your latte. The Uliver was participating in the 1934 London to Melbourne air race when it got into difficulty and needed to make an emergency landing. The residents of Albury answered an appeal by the local radio station and lined up their cars to illuminate the local racetrack to be used as a runway for the plane, while the towns engineer used the street lighting system to flash Albury in Morse Code. The story has a happy ending and the plane landed bumpily but safely.
Getting There
The airport can be easily reached while driving via the Hume Freeway, it is well sign posted and so is easy to find when approaching from Melbourne,
Canberra and of course Sydney. By air, it is very easy to connect with also as there are over 200 flights in and out of the airport weekly. There are daily flights from both Melbourne and Sydney and also regular flights to and from Canberra, all of which are less than one hour away by air. As the Airport is only five kilometres from the city centre, taxis are easy to catch and there are shuttle buses that run from the centre of town to the airport on a regular basis.
There’s plenty to see in the region around Albury. Although the town isn’t a tourist destination, the mountains of the Great Dividing Range make for a great drive if you’ve hired a car. There’s also the famous wine producing region of Rutherglen and as long as you have an appointed driver, a day visiting the vineyards and tasting the excellent wine is a must.
