Tirana Airport Mini Guide

What can you Tell me About Tirana?
Tirana is the capital of Albania, until recently one of Europe’s most secretive countries. Gradually opening up to western ideals and capitalism, the country, and Tirana in particular, are strongly promoting their attractions which include fabulous scenery, ancient cities and stunning religious buildings. Regularly highlighted as one of THE places to visit in 2012, it makes for an interesting and slightly edgy tourist destination for those who are already fond of the Balkan countries.

How do I get to Tirana?
Albania has only one international airport in the village of Rinas, about 11km away from the city. Travellers from the UK are fortunate in having two routes to Tirana; BA fly from Heathrow whilst Belle Air fly from London Stansted. Transport into Tirana is available but in this still developing country, can be a bit of a minefield to negotiate. The best option by far is to pre-book a hire car online just after confirming your flights and then collecting it on arrival at the airport.

What is Tirana Airport Like?
Knowing the recent history of the country you might expect the airport to be poor but nothing could be further from the truth. The airport was leased to the German company, Hochtief in 2005 who, almost immediately set about rebuilding it. Works completed in 2008 have left a modern terminal with great facilities. There are three places to get food and drink with the best of them being Piazza in the arrival area. There they do a selection of hot meals including pizza, pasta and more. Several shops are also located in the airport selling a variety of merchandise. ADF is the airport’s duty free shop whilst other shops sell gifts, jewellery, handbags and travel goods. The airport is also one of few in Europe to offer free Wi-Fi to all airport users.

Latest Update from Tirana Airport:

17/06/12 - Despite having new facilities, the airport is increasingly concerned over growing traffic at the airport with the popularity of the country and the increase in trade as Albania prepares a bid for entry to the EU. Plans already laid down will double the airport's capacity once complete, although commencement awaits EU funding.

Albania is considered to be a developing country and is the poorest in Europe. Because of this you shouldn’t expect decent roads apart from those approaching the main cities. Even in the city, you’ll need a sturdy car and for that reason you should take a look at our Tirana Airport car hire.

We offer only up to date models of hire cars at Tirana Airport and back them up with a comprehensive peace of mind package that includes collision damage waiver, comprehensive insurance and 24 hour roadside assistance should you require it.  You can pre-book the additional security of four wheel drive vehicles so when the road ends and the track continues, you’ll know your rental car will be up to the job. Pre-booking also guarantees your choice of vehicle and ensures that it’s available with the minimum of fuss when you arrive at the Tirana Airport car hire desk.
