Guide to Albania
It’s a very poor country that whilst trying to improve its lot has had several setbacks over the last two decades. Today things look to be improving and whilst the infrastructure and range of goods and services including accommodation may still be well below expected European standards, potential membership of the EU has brought investment to the country and a slowly improving standard of living.
Getting to Albania?
Albania’s main airport is found near the capital Tirana. There are flights to Tirana from many European destinations, especially with the commencement of flights with low cost airline Belle Air who have a route from London Stansted
whilst BA fly from Heathrow
to Tirana. Most major European cities also have flights to the Albanian capital. It’s not far from the airport into the city but you do need to be aware of potential scams from the airport taxis which can sometimes try to fleece unsuspecting tourists.
Things to do in Albania?
The Albanian coast is a popular place with local and international tourists. The resorts are often quiet and the sea clear and clean. There are some lovely beaches, even if many of them are a little stony. Inland the terrain is rugged and mountainous with castles perched atop many of them guarding important passes from long ago. On the way you’ll pass villages and towns that progress seems to have ignored and amongst the traditional sights you’ll receive a hospitable welcome.
