Bury St Edmunds Mini Guide

What can you Tell me About Bury St Edmunds?
The town is thought to have developed in Roman times before becoming a Saxon royal town. The founding of the Benedictine Abbey brought new wealth and growth to the town before Henry VIII sought to destroy it in the reformation. Much of the stone from the abbey has been used in building other local historic properties over the remainder of the Tudor and Stuart times. Today it is a thriving market town with a developing tourism industry.

How Easy is it to get to Bury St Edmunds?
You can fly into Norwich International whilst for a wider selection of starting points, Luton and Stansted are not vast distances away. The east coast railway line passes near Bury St Edmunds with a connection to the town’s railway station. This allows you to get to the town by public transport and hire a car there if you don’t want a long, unfamiliar drive.

What is There to see and do in Bury St Edmunds?
The remains of the old abbey can be seen in the Abbey Gardens. Whilst there’s not much left to see, you do get a good indication of what the site was like in its glory and it’s still an atmospheric place. Fans of real ale will love a guided tour of the Greene King brewery, the largest regional brewery in the country.
