The airport came into existence since 1920 as a private airfield which was later bought by Milwaukee County in 1926 and to this day is owned by the state. Initially named the Milwaukee County Airport it was renamed in honour of the World War II Brigadier General William 'Billy' Mitchell.

The airport has grown substantially since its beginnings as an airfield and now has four runways at its disposal. The main terminal has many retail shops and bars and restaurants to choose from, it also has a museum that is dedicated to flight. For aircraft enthusiasts there is a observation point in which the public can enjoy the take offs and landings and the transmissions tower even broadcasts on a public FM frequency so people can listen to the airline and tower chatter!
