Milwaukee Airport is also known as General Mitchell International Airport and is located 8 kilometres from the central business area of Milwaukee. The airport is large in size and handled nearly 8 million passengers in 2008. The airport handles both domestic and international flights.

The airport is designed with one terminal and three concourses for passenger arrivals and departures. Several airlines operate out of Milwaukee airport including US Airways, Midwest Airlines and Delta Connection. These three airline take most of the 50 gates available for check in. There are an average of 240 daily departures from Milwaukee Airport and these flights are destined for around ninety differing cities and locations both in the USA and outside.



The airport came into existence since 1920 as a private airfield which was later bought by Milwaukee County in 1926 and to this day is owned by the state. Initially named the Milwaukee County Airport it was renamed in honour of the World War II Brigadier General William 'Billy' Mitchell.

The airport has grown substantially since its beginnings as an airfield and now has four runways at its disposal. The main terminal has many retail shops and bars and restaurants to choose from, it also has a museum that is dedicated to flight. For aircraft enthusiasts there is a observation point in which the public can enjoy the take offs and landings and the transmissions tower even broadcasts on a public FM frequency so people can listen to the airline and tower chatter!
