Kentucky Mini Guide
How do I get to Kentucky?
There are two international airports in Kentucky but only Cincinnati Kentucky airport
has flights from Europe and then only from Paris Charles de Gaulle
. Travellers from other European cities would be advised to get a budget flight to Paris
from their airports and then take the Delta flight direct to Cincinnati Kentucky airport. There’s a bus shuttle into Cincinnati only and since Cincinnati is in Ohio
, you’d be better off renting a car at the airport to explore the Bluegrass state. As always, pre-booking your car is advised, especially at peak times, to avoid having to accept an unsuitable car at the airport.
What is There to see in Kentucky?
If you’re there at the height of the American horse racing season, you can visit the country’s version of Epsom and watch the Kentucky Derby run in Louisville
. Mammoth Cave is a fascinating visit and the one for which Kentucky is best known. The cave system is recognised by UNESCO and is nearly four hundred miles in length. Many species call the caves their home and are specially protected for their rarity. Most visitors will only see a small part of the caves but they will get an idea of the size and complexity of the caves from their visit. An exciting tour can be had of Fort Knox, the world’s most famous bank vault and immortalised in the Bond film, ‘Goldfinger’. The facility isn’t open to the general public but a visitor centre will tell you all the facts and figures. Kentucky is home to the world’s longest cave system, the nearly 400 mile long Mammoth Cave.
