Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport Mini Guide

The Airport
Adnan Menderes is Turkey’s fourth busiest airport with over 8.5 million passengers passing through its doors last year. The airport is easy to find and once there, over two thousand parking spaces including valet and disabled await you. The airport is found about 11 miles from the city centre.

Getting There
29 airlines fly into Izmir. The majority are charter flights arriving for holiday destinations but many scheduled flights land there including those by Turkish Airlines and budget airlines easyJet and Sun Express.

Getting to Your Destination
The airport has a railway station as well as a metro stop with 14 trains a day calling at the airport. The train goes north of the airport to the central railway station for connecting trains throughout the region. A Havas shuttle bus calls at many points in the city whilst local buses are also a useful way of getting to parts of Izmir. There is a shuttle link to the ferry for journeys to Uckuyular from Konak and Bostanli. Taxis operate from the airport but can be an expensive way of getting around unless you share.

Car hire is available at the airport with the company offices situated in the arrivals concourse. At busy times we would recommend that you arrange your car hire before leaving home to ensure you get your preferred choice. Once landed, send a member of your group through to queue whilst others collect the luggage. That way you’ll save time avoiding a wait in a long queue. Leaving the airport you’ll join the coastal road which, travelling north, will bring you to the outer ring road of Izmir. From there, notable points are signposted.

Airport Facilities
In the departure area there’s a branch of Vakiflar Bankasi before security and a currency exchange office after. In arrivals there’s a currency exchange office after baggage reclaim. ATMs are also available at the airport.

Shopping is limited to a good range of Turkish handicrafts, food products and souvenirs together with a duty free shop selling wines, spirits and liqueurs, tobacco products and beauty products, together with chocolate and gifts.

Eating at the airport is a little limited too. There are a number of snack bars and cafes plus a Burger King outlet. The only decent establishment is Ton-Ton, a Turkish light meal restaurant which does serve delicious fare.

PortClinic have a branch at the airport able to deal with medical problems 24 hours a day. Wi-Fi facilities are available across the airport but are chargeable on a pay per use basis everywhere except the lounges where it is free.

There is a prayer room which is available 24 hours a day.

Extra Assistance
This modern airport has many facilities to help passengers with reduced mobility. Self-opening doors, disabled toilet facilities and tactile paths all help whilst trained members of staff are on hand to give assistance provided 48 hours’ notice has been given. You should always inform your airline of any particular needs so that they can accommodate you properly in flight and at your destination.

Latest Update from Izmir Airport:

02/06/12 - Double figure gains in passenger numbers are set to continue as Turkish Airlines look to introduce new European routes into Izmir this summer, mainly from Germany.

Izmir Airport is the entry point for tourists heading for the popular resort of Kusadasi but also for those wishing to visit the world famous sites of ancient Ephesus, Pergamon and Sardis. Ephesus is not to be missed if you have a hire car to get you there.

Formerly a port, the harbour silted up and the city is now over a mile inland. Apart from having one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World in the Temple of Artemis, it is also thought to be where the Virgin Mary spent the last years of her life.
