Kristianstad Airport Mini Guide
All airports have a unique three letter code recognisable by airlines all over the world, normally they are something which you recognise easily, i.e. MAN for Manchester
etc., however, for some reason Kristianstad is known as KID, easy to remember once you know it!
A Very Small and Quiet Airport
There is usually only one flight operating in and out of Kristianstad Airport and that is to Stockholm Arlanda Airport
, run by Skyways Express. As it does not operate international services you will not find any duty free shops there, just a small automated cafeteria offering drinks and snacks prior to boarding your flight.
There is free Wi-Fi available throughout the airport terminal, a must, as the majority of passengers are travelling on business. Kristianstad is located in the south eastern Scania region of Sweden, only an hour and a half's drive from Malmo
, the largest city in the south of the country.
Cheaper to Rent a Car
The chances are that if you are arriving at Kristianstad Airport you will be on business and will need to travel around, even if only locally. Taxis are extremely expensive in Sweden, so it is far more economical to hire a car and drive yourself, most of the international car rental companies are represented at Kristianstad Airport.
Whilst you are in the area, why not take time out to visit one of the many local nature reserves – the Kristianstad's Vattenrike in the Helge River Valley is not too far away and there you can enjoy a safari by boat, jeep or on foot at any time of the year when the river is free of ice. There are also the quiet beaches along the east coast of the country along the Baltic Sea and several golf courses in the area.
Where to Stay in the Area
Whilst there are no airport hotels at Kristianstad Airport, it is only minutes from the town centre where there are several hotels of varying standards to suit everyone, There is one of the Best Western chain in the centre of town, but they are mainly locally owned hotels, each with their own personality. Most of them are housed in refurbished 19th century buildings and all get excellent reviews. As you would expect in Sweden most come with sauna access, either in the hotel itself or at a nearby spa.
It is impossible to go hungry in this part of the world, although Kristianstad is not a large place, it has several restaurants offering a wide choice of cuisine, including lots of fresh local produce as this farming area of Sweden produces much of the country's home grown food. It is also the area of the country famous for it's Absolut vodka, although if you are sampling this perhaps you'd better make sure you can walk back to your hotel!
19/05/12 - Whilst there is currently only the single flight to Kristianstad, blog postings seem to indicate early interest from Ryanair who want to take advantage of this profitable route into Stockholm. Watch this space!
