Guide to Hondarribia
Hondarribia, Fuenterrabia or San Sebastian?
This small airport in the Basque area of northern Spain actually goes under all the names listed above, although to make things easier it has the same three letter airport code of EAS in all of the languages.
San Sebastian is of course the English name for the nearby city, Fuenterrabia, the Spanish and Hondarribia the Basque, a language widely spoken by the proud people in this part of Spain.
Where Is It?
San Sebastian is situated on the northernmost coast of Spain close to the French border, it's airport is on the La Bidassoa river 22km north east of the city, this river actually marks the border between Spain and
France making the airport an ideal base for visits to northern Spain and also to the
Biarritz area of France which is just along the coast. Whilst being a small airport compared to many nowadays, it consistently handles 260,000 passengers per year and is served by mainly Spanish airlines with flights to
Madrid and Barcelona's
El Prat.
Facilities at the Airport
Despite it's size Hondarribia still has all the facilities you would expect from any airport. Inside the terminal you will find tourist information, a shop, cafe and banking facilities. Should you be travelling on a business trip there are VIP lounges and a meeting room available for your use. The usual facilities for those with restricted mobility are available and any help needed is given upon request. There are also four hotels situated close to the airport if your flight is not at a convenient time to travel to or from further afield.
Places to Explore Nearby
The town of Hondarribia itself dates from 6AD so is of great historical interest with many old buildings to explore. In the summer months the beach is a popular place to visit with swimming and a wide variety of water sports on offer. Just cross the river into France and there is the old city of Biarritz – noted for it's famous visitors of the past ranging from Queen Victoria to more recently Frank Sinatra. Nowadays this is an up to date city of French, Spanish and Basque cultures offering a diverse range of things to do – the history to discover, the beaches for both swimming and surfing and it's gastronomy. Accommodation there ranges from camp sites to the Hotel du Palais, once the summer residence of Napoleon III and the Empress Eugenie.
Hondarribia is the perfect destination to pick up your hire car before setting off to explore the countryside of Southern France and Northern Spain. Pre-book your car online and choose any extras you may want such as child car seats or sat-nav systems and they’ll all be ready for you so you can get away from the airport and begin enjoying your holiday.
Rhinocarhire.com prides itself on its excellent service combined with unbeatable value for money. With car hire costing from only 15 euros a day there’s no better way of getting around on holiday. It certainly beats the cost of those hotel organised excursions.
