Benicarlo Mini Guide

Located in the north east of Spain below Barcelona, Benicarlo is a municipality and city in the region of Castello. It is a popular spot with holiday makers as it overlooks the Mediterranean Coast and has good weather for most of the year. Although tourism is now the main trade, Benicarlo originally prospered as a fishing town. The seafood there is still excellent and well worth trying if you plan to have a meal out. Whilst considering what to eat, try the famous artichokes grown nearby, they are rumoured to have the best flavour in the world because of the soil they are grown in. Historically Benicarlo was once a farming area for Muslims before being taken over by James the Conqueror. In the 19th century it was doing a burgeoning wine trade with South America.

Benicarlo San Bartolome

Both locals and people from other parts of Europe travel to Benicarlo to relax amongst other things. Benicarlo is easily accessible with a hire car as you can use the A7 highway and for those who are not driving there is a train station and rail track. There are several public holidays around which you could plan your vacation. The Falles festival takes place in March and there are saints' day celebrations in May and August. Although much of the town was destroyed over the years it still has a very attractive layout for the walker to look at.

There are a number of Renaissance buildings and interesting museums to check out including a baroness' house. The 18th century church is located at the Plaza San Bartolome. There is an even older chapel, built in the 16th century, on the outskirts of Benicarlo.

Latest Update from Benicarlo:

27/04/12 - Get out and about to the charming little resort of Benicasim, just south of Benicarlo. There, the beautiful palm fringed beach forms the coastal strip of the Las Palmas Desert and you'll see the impressive Bartolo Peak at over 2,500ft.

03/02/13 - Benicarlo's fortunes are inextricably linked to the sea and each year the city hosts a 'Festival of the Sea' celebrating the importance. You'll find displays near the port, the chance to go on board trawlers and to try some quayside seafood cooked fresh off the boat. This year the celebration is penned in for the weekend beginning on the 19th July.
