Bucharest Airport Mini Guide

About the Airport
Henri Coanda International Airport is Romania’s busiest airport. It is situated 16km from the city of Bucharest and is sometimes referred to by its old name Bucharest Otopeni International Airport. It was renamed in 2004 after flight pioneer Henri Coanda. The airport has a single terminal with 2 buildings that are joined by a walkway with shops.

How Would I get There?
Over 36 airlines currently fly into the airport and there are routes from Europe and Russia. There are some routes from holiday destinations also and some are seasonal. The busiest routes are from/to Munich and Vienna.

Can I get to the City Easily?
There is a direct train service from the airport train station to Gara de Nord in the city. First you have to take the shuttle bus from the airport to the station and this is included in your ticket price. The 780 bus route by RATB is an express service to Gara de Nord or take the 783 to get to the city centre. If you are staying in a hotel, it is worth checking to see if they have a shuttle bus service. If you are driving, take the DN1 route into the city.

What’s at the Airport for me?
There are information desks in the public areas in the airport, should you get lost or need to ask a question. If you need to change some money there are 3 currency exchange counters and a bank as well as 8 ATMs located around the terminal. Internet facilities are available for a charge. There is also a pharmacy and hairdressers available.

Are There any Shops?
You can buy your favourite magazine at Relay or buy the latest novel at the bookstore. Tax paid shops have fragrances and cosmetics for a last minute gift or you can browse the rails of designer clothes and pick up some leather goods.

What if I get Hungry?
There are a number of places to eat at the airport. Stop by at Talisman Snack Bar if you are in a hurry or visit the World News Café. For panoramic views of the airport go to Belle Vue Bar and Restaurant or the self service Oasis Restaurant. Savoir Vivre Café/Bar is a popular choice and located on the walkway. Coffee and soft drinks are available from machines around the terminal building.

Does the Airport Have a Hotel?
There are a few hotels around the airport. Angelo Airport Hotel Bucharest is just a few minutes walk away, although a shuttle bus service is offered. The hotel has free Wi-Fi and modern rooms. There is a 24 hour restaurant and the Skygate Bar has Romanian and international dishes.

What if I Need Special Help?
Persons with reduced mobility will receive special attention at the airport and it is easy to negotiate around, if you are using a wheelchair. Specially qualified persons will help you through your airport experience.

Customer questions about Bucharest Airport car hire

Hi Fiona, we are looking to hire a car from Bucharest Otopeni (OTP) airport but need to travel to Bulgaria, is this OK, looking at a Peugeot 107 or similar?

Hi, most rental agents permit cross border travel within the EU, however there are restrictions and often an extra charge is payable at the rental counter or arrival. You can check this by using the T&C' for the 107 you have chosen and navigate to Extra Services / Cross-border and Boundary Rules.

Other car hire locations in Romania

We specialise in car rentals throughout Romania fo find you the best price and that's a promise...

There’s much to see in Bucharest you needn’t leave the city during your stay but if you’ve hired a car there are some wonderful discoveries to be made outside the city. First you should visit Snagov on hot summer days. The lake is cool and refreshing and makeshift beaches line its shore. In the middle of the lake is an island which is the burial site of the infamous Vlad Dracul the Impaler.

At Busteni, a little distance from the city, take a gondola ride up Omu Mountain for the view and marvel at the element-carved rock formations.
