Please Can I Have Some Background Information?
Situated in the Santarem District of Portugal and located on a hill above the River Tagus, Abrantes is abundant in beautiful olive woods, gardens and vines.  With a population of around 40,000, the city is divided in two with narrow cobbled streets and whitewashed houses in the historic centre and at the base of the hill top, modern apartment buildings, commercial and retail outlets. This area is known as the new town of Abrantes. It was the encampment of napoleon for four weeks during his Iberian campaign but the valiant townspeople, aided by the British, threw him out.

Where Can I Go?
For Portugese culture, the 15th century church of Santa Maria do Castelo is situated on the hilltop and Dom Lopo de Almeida Museum houses the tombs of the Almeida family, who were once Counts of Abrantes.  The museum boasts a superb collection of Sevillian tiles, 15th century sculptures and 16th century paintings.Dom Lopo de Almeida Museum.

Just a short drive from Abrantes is the Castelo de Almourol.  This castle is set on a tiny island in the Tagus River and can only be accessed by a boat trip across the river.  It is said that the castle is haunted by the ghost of a princess sighing for the love of her slave.  There are numerous leisure facilities in and around the city, including a sports stadium, an indoor and outdoor municipal pool, several parks and a river beach.  São Lorenco Park is a nice place to relax and provides activities for children.
