Krakow Mini Guide

What Should I Know About Krakow?
It’s the second largest city in Poland and one of its oldest. For over seven centuries it was Poland’s capital city. In the Second World War it became the capital once again under the Nazis before suffering once more under communist rule. Today look hard enough and you’ll find a beautiful city hidden amongst the concrete monstrosities of the Soviet times and a growing tourist industry fronted by friendly, welcoming people who want you to enjoy your time in the city.

What’s the Easiest way to get to Krakow?
It couldn’t be easier with Ryanair, EasyJet and Jet2 operating direct flights from many regional airports across the UK such as Leeds, Liverpool, Gatwick and Bristol, flight times are around three hours and once there you’ll find buses to get you into the city centre or you can pre-arrange one of our hire cars for you to collect at the airport giving you a convenient way of getting into the city.
What are the City’s Main Sights?
Almost all of the things worth seeing are concentrated in the old town, obligingly found in the district of Stare Miasto which means ‘old town’ despite being in the major part, quite modern. It’s there you’ll find the UNESCO accredited Wawel Castle, built near where the city was founded. The castle is said to be the most beautiful castle in central Europe. The Barbakan continues the defensive theme with a building that guarded the Florian gate entrance into the city. Built in the 15th century it was expected to help defend the city from an Ottoman invasion that never materialised. The Florian gate, linked historically to the Barbakan is the last remaining part of the city’s defensive wall. Besides these, you can visit the many historic churches and cathedrals as well as walk the ‘Royal Mile’ and marvel at the architecture that lines it.

What’s the Best way to Spend an Evening?
If you’re culturally minded then a night at the theatre is a must. The Juliusz Slowacki Theatre found between the railway station and Krakow’s main square is the prime venue and has a sumptuously decorated building which plays host to top productions. You could begin your evening or round it off with a meal at Wierzynek, not cheap, but a fabulous introduction to the best of Polish cuisine.
