  • Expansion is set to be put in place with investment of hundreds of millions of Krona over the next few years.

Kirkenes Airport Mini Guide

You’re Taking me to Kirkenes? Why?
It’ll be romantic, watching the summer sun dip but never actually set below the horizon giving endless days of sun. If we go in winter then I’ll take you out onto the icefields with something to warm us up as we watch the northern lights dance across the sky. If you want some adventure we’ll go the the three nation border where Russia, Finland and Norway meet and then we’ll go to see the work of famous Sami artist Jon Savio in the Grenselandmuseet.

Kirkenes Northern lights

And how Will we get There?
We’ll catch a flight to Oslo, we can even spend a day or so in the Norwegian capital before catching a connecting flight and heading up further and further from civilisation to land at Kirkenes Airport.

Kirkenes Airport

Is the Airport a Shack in the Middle of Nowhere?
No, Kirkenes Airport opened its new terminal five years ago and is now a modern airport. Once we arrive we can check at the information desk for bus timetables and accommodation. There’s a local bus service that stops at several destinations including the university and major hotels in town. If we miss the bus we can take a taxi which is quite reasonably priced but to be able to see the area we can hire a car at the airport. We should pre-book it to make sure we get a four wheeled drive one and then it’s quick and easy to the town centre.

What About Duty Free Shopping on our Return?
You’ll have to wait until Oslo for that. The airport is only a domestic one so has no duty free, only a small kiosk selling papers, magazines and sweets and snacks. There’s a small café there serving hot and cold drinks, plus light bites but we need to take something a little more substantial or it might be an idea to have a meal before going to the airport. If you take your laptop you can spend the time on Facebook or checking your emails if you want. You get an hour free.

Latest Update from Kirkenes Airport:

6/05/12 - Kirkenes Airport is at the beginning of a major programme to lengthen and strengthen the runway, allowing bigger aircraft to operate flights to central and eastern Europe. Work is expected to finish by 2017.

If you’ve travelled to Kirkenes then adventure must flow through your veins. It’s not your usual weekend retreat and here in the Arctic Circle you would possibly have been considering snowmobile rather than car rental! So with extreme temperatures, poor roads, and uncertain communication, you’ll want to be sure that your car will be reliable as it could mean the difference between life and death.

The range includes 4 x 4 vehicles and we can arrange extras such as sat-nav, winter tyres or snow chains. Book online today and see why we were voted Best on the Road in 2018.
