Are you Fed up of Run of the Mill Destinations?
You need to visit Alta for some seriously different adventures. It’s known as the town of the northern lights for almost every night the Aurora Borealis is visible above the town. In the winter you can go on dog sled rides or snowmobile safaris through the bleak landscape. In summer you can swim in the rivers and reservoir and fish for salmon. History lovers can see the Alta rock carvings, some of which are over 8,000 years old. For townies, Bossekop has a quaint market and Alta has modern shopping centres and restaurants. There’s even a university campus here.
How do I get to Alta Then?
You’ll need to get a connecting flight from
Oslo unless you’re travelling from the only international destination in
Bulgaria. The connecting flight is just over an hour.
What’s Alta Airport Like?
It’s fairly big for a regional airport, in fact it’s the largest in Finnmark serving over 330,000 passengers last year. It’s modern, built in 1974 and updated since.
What do I do When I Arrive There?
If you need help then the information desk is easily found in the arrivals hall. Here they can help with onward travel questions and find you accommodation. There are no banks or cashpoint machines here so you’ll have to wait until you get to your destination or bring currency with you. Getting to your accommodation is down to three options. You can take the local shuttle bus called ‘The Alta’ this connects to a series of destinations within Finnmark including Elvebakken and Bossekop as well as Alta itself. There are taxis too if you don’t want to spend your time touring the region whilst dropping off passengers. Finally you can hire a car here although to get the one you want you really should book in advance. There are only three roads linking to the airport road and each takes you to the centre of the three main towns here.
What can I do at the Airport Whilst Waiting for my Flight Home?
Facilities are a little limited for a medium size airport and if you’re hungry you have only got the cafeteria which serves a narrow range of snacks and hot food which is tasty though. Hot, cold and alcoholic drinks can be purchased here too. There’s no duty free, instead there’s a small kiosk selling newspapers, sweets and magazines. Whilst waiting for your flight you’re entitled to an hour of free Wi-Fi.
16/05/12 - If you've ever wondered why the available flights are different on a Saturday, you'll be interested to learn that the airport closes every Saturday at half past two with no further flights until Sunday morning at nine. If you need to be in Alta over a weekend, bear these times in mind.
