Ostersund Airport Car Hire - Did You Know?

  • Ostersund Airport is also called Are Airport as it also serves the city of Are, 50 miles away.
  • The airport is only six miles west of Ostersund.
  • It opened in 1958.
  • Last year nearly 400,000 people travelled to the region through the airport.
  • All flights are seasonal apart from the scheduled domestic flights to Stockholm.

Ostersund Airport Mini Guide

Why am I Going to Ostersund?
You’ll go there mostly for the sport. The city has applied several times, unsuccessfully, to host the Winter Olympics but has nearly all the events available. In the summer, the lake is the perfect venue for swimming, sailing and waterskiing.

From Where can I fly to get to Ostersund?
There are quite a number of seasonal flights from many European cities and it depends on what each country calls seasonal. Some only operate in the winter to take advantage of the winter sports whilst some only operate in summer for the outdoor life in the sun. All year round flights operate from Stockholm so if you need to get here, connecting flights will help.

The Airport
Ostersund Airport is unusual in that it’s on an island in the lake which the city borders. A bridge crosses from the island so you are only ten minutes away from the centre when you land.

What’s the Airport Like?
It’s small and lacks the facilities of a bigger airport but has all the basics a traveller needs for what is, after all, a small part of a trip. The airport has the facilities to help people with reduced mobility or sight and hearing problems. Just remember to let the airport know well in advance of your trip.

Ostersund Airport

There’s one food outlet there uninspiringly called ‘Food Airport’ and the food very much matches the description! There’s a newsagents and sweet shop together with a duty free outlet available to those taking international flights. No surprises there either - lots of vodka, tobacco products and a few international names in perfume together with chocolates and gifts. If you’ve run out of cash, you’ll be out of luck too as there’s no bank or ATM there.

How Can I Get to and From the Airport?
There’s plenty of parking according to the airport, usually because the airport isn’t very busy. There’s a bus which departs every half hour for the city centre together with a more expensive pre-bookable coach shuttle. Taxis are plentiful, if expensive so car hire is often your best bet with several companies represented in the arrivals hall. As always, pre-booking your hire car is advisable to ensure you get your choice of vehicle.

Latest Update from Ostersund Airport:

20/05/12 - Nextjet are cutting back on their domestic services and will lose the routes from Lulea and Umea. Travellers wishing to journey from Umea needn't worry though as Direktflyg will commence a route from Umea as Nextjet's ends.

Ostersund Airport is the perfect arrival point for your journey around the historic area of Jamtland. Ostersund is the only city in the region and is on the shores of Lake Storsjon, opposite Froson Island where you’ll find the airport.

The city is very sports orientated from designating itself as a winter city to the boat trips and water sports available on the lake in summer. There are a number of marked walking trails around the lake which is the fifth biggest in Sweden. Magical in winter, the view is lush and green in the warm summer months.
