Sogndal Airport Mini Guide

Why Would I Visit Sogndal?
Some people find the area around Sogndal a little too quiet but that’s part of its charm. It’s a long way inland but at the end of a very long fjord, the Fjaerslandfjord that links it with the sea. The waters of the fjord are calm allowing for sailing and other water based activities although the water is a little chilly for swimming for all but the brave. The local attractions include a folk museum with traditional homes and tools on display demonstrating what life was like in the past.

Sogndal Fjord

A popular trip for visitors is the high speed ferry to Bergen. You can leave in the morning and enjoy a whole day in the city before returning later to the peace of Sogndal. Other than that there’s the historic church and several shops in Sogndal which is the main town for the region.

How Easy is it to Get to?
There’s a small airport, 12 miles south of Sogndal which serves the area. There’s only one operator, Wideroe, who fly domestic routes only, including Bergen and Oslo, so you’ll need to get a flight to one of these destinations before catching a connecting flight. Once at the airport, you’re only twenty minutes from Sogndal centre.

Sogndal Airport

What is The Airport like?
Small, modern and comfortable best describes the airport. Facilities are limited but then it is a small airport that served under a hundred thousand passengers last year. It’s close enough to Sogndal not to worry too much about the lack of facilities.

What will I Encounter on Arrival?
The airport is small so there isn’t a long walk from the plane. For any queries about airport matters, accommodation, onward travel or tourist information, go to the small help desk by the administration offices where you’ll be helped. To get to Sogndal from the airport you can either take the bus which takes about twenty minutes despite several stops on the way. Taxis are available too but often need to be booked from the airport. Car hire is available at the airport but as the agents have a limited number of cars on site, it’s often advisable to pre-book your car to ensure you get your choice. There are no banks or ATMs at the airport so make sure you bring enough currency with you to last a day or so.

And when it’s Time to Leave?
Check in and security are very quick as the flights are only internal. If you have reduced mobility or sensory impairment make sure you advise your airline well in advance of your needs. Staff at the airport are able and willing to help you through the airport procedures and onto the plane. Facilities here are limited with only a kiosk serving cold snacks and sandwiches plus a small range of groceries. There’s no duty free as it’s a domestic airport but there is free Wi-Fi so if you’re missing retail therapy you can shop online!!

Latest Update from Sogndal Airport:

17/05/12 - Sogndal Airport is unusual in that routes to it are operated by a single company under a contract from the Norwegian government to provide public service flights. For that reason, it is unlikely that any additional routes, domestic or international will be added. The benefit is that flight prices are subsidised and so travel to Sogndal is cheap.

To get the most out of your time in Sogndal a hire car is a must. Use it to get to see the Heiberg collection at the folk museum. There, you’ll find buildings and tools as they would have been hundreds of years ago. There are interactive elements to the exhibits and the museum is fun for all the family.

Next, head to the Stave Church, an imposing wooden building that stands on the site of two older churches. Built in the 19th century, it has recently been renovated to its original form.
