Managua Mini Guide

What can you Tell me About Managua?
The city began as a small fishing village on the shores of Lake Nicaragua, the biggest lake in Central America. It became the capital because of its position halfway between Granada and Leon. From humble beginnings it soon grew to encompass a quarter of the country’s population and developed into an industrial and commercial centre. Today it also promotes the cultural and historical aspects of the city in an attempt to attract tourists.

How do I get to Managua?
Managua has its own airport in the Augusto C Sandino International airport which accepts flights from Canada, the US and Latin America. No flights outside of these countries operate at the moment and travellers from Europe will need to connect via the main US airports or through Toronto Pearson. Transport into the city is simple enough with taxis, buses and car hire all available for the five mile journey.

Managua Cathedral

What Should I do When in Managua?
The old cathedral is a poignant memorial to the 1972 earthquake which killed five thousand citizens and destroyed thousands of buildings. Visit the ruins to see the effect of the earthquake. Take a trip to the former National Palace which is now a museum dedicated to the native peoples of Nicaragua. Finally spend an afternoon at Tiscapa Lagoon, formed in the crater of an ancient volcano.
