Beirut Mini Guide

Why Beirut?
It’s one of the last remaining undiscovered cities within the medium haul flight range. Closed to travellers for years because of internal struggles, it has clawed its way back into the tourist domain by repairing damaged buildings and promoting the tourist friendly aspects of the city. It’s also one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the Middle East dating back over 3,500 years. There’s plenty of evidence of its past dotted around the city and if you want a further dose of history, Byblos, where the bible was supposedly compiled, is less than an hour away.

How do I get to Beirut?
There are two main ways people get to Beirut. You can fly into the country’s only international airport from the UK with BA and Middle East Airlines. Alternatively you can take a holiday to Cyprus and spend part of your holiday on a mini cruise to the city, perhaps incorporating it with a visit to Egypt and Israel.

What is There for me to see in Beirut?
For those interested in history, the National Museum of Beirut is a must. Displaying thousands of artefacts from across Beirut’s existence, it gives a visual timeline of the city and the country.

For a spectacular natural attraction, try the Jeita Grotto which is a 9km series of caves found 12 miles north of the city. The caves are home to a river as well as the world’s longest stalactite.

Within Beirut itself, the city has much to offer those who simply want to soak up the atmosphere of one of the Middle East’s oldest cities. Beautiful buildings line the streets of the old quarter which are dotted with fabulous restaurants and cafes whilst craft stalls sell a million and one trinkets for you to take home.
