Charleroi Mini Guide

Charleroi means King Charles in French or Belgian and this is the fifth largest city in Belgium and part of the province of Wallonia. This area of Belgium is big in the coal and steel mining industry. Charleroi has something of a gritty and run down reputation so it is not that popular with Belgians nor tourists but the airport there is very well known.

View of Charleroi Belgium

Brussels Charleroi Airport is a real hub for many low cost flights with airlines like Ryanair and Easyjet. Some of the routes which are in operation are to Djerba, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Monastir, Murcia, Tangier and Tenerife South. More than five million people use the airport every year. Quite a few hotels are located around the airport for those who are in transit. For a reliable place to stay you can try the Best Western Charleroi at 1A Boulevard Mayence, 6000 Charleroi.

The Bois Du Cazier Charleroi

In Charleroi itself there are some interesting museums to visit. They are the Site du bois du Cazier a Marcinelle, the Museum of Photography Charleroi at 11 Avenue Paul Pastur, the Musee archeologique and the Musee des Beaux Arts to name but a few. When walking around Charleroi stay away from any neighbourhoods in the lower end of town, especially those which have graffiti as they are gang controlled.

Latest Update from Charleroi:

20/05/12 - From now until the 18th August the Museum of Fine Arts is hosting an interactive exhibition of photography called 'Magic in the Air'. As well as seeing stunning examples of world class photography, visitors can take their own photos, work with image editing and see models getting ready for a shoot. The exhibition is angled towards children and promises to be a lot of fun.

Read our Frequently Asked Questions

The city of Charleroi is part of the province of Hainaut in Belgium. In days gone by this was a centre for the steel industry and the production of coal. This industrial slant is why the area around Charleroi is known as the black country.

Most of our customers there are on business as Charleroi has something of a gritty reputation. However there are attractive sights for tourists to admire like the old belfry which is classed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Don’t forget that we also offer low cost car rentals from Charleroi Airport.
