Sydney Mini Guide
Instantly recognisable from the Harbour Bridge and Opera House in its bay, Sydney is Australia’s most iconic city. Capital of the south Australian state of New South Wales, Sydney is not actually Australia’s capital but is the country’s premier city. This sun kissed city is replete with skyscrapers and has a very high quality of living with beautiful beaches and good food to be found everywhere.
It is also the most cosmopolitan of Australia’s cities despite having started out as a British penal colony in the 18th century. Since then people have come from all over the world to live in Sydney. Despite having only having around four and a half million inhabitants, Sydney is surrounded by suburbs and the metropolitan area sprawls out for miles around. Because Sydney is relatively under populated parking is not too bad and traffic is OK as long as you avoid rush hours. Parking is expensive though and so are the fines so take care to park legally.
Also keep an eye on speed limits as these change frequently. Quite a few of the roads in Sydney operate on a toll system but you can buy a tag or an e-pass so that you are covered. At the centre of Sydney is its financial district. The stunning red Sydney Harbour Bridge lies in a part of the city known as the Rocks. There is another harbour area, Darling Harbour while Haymarket and Chinatown lie to the south of the city. In eastern Sydney you can find the districts of Darlinghurst, Kings Cross
Arriving you will fly into Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport and you will definitely be glad to pick up your Rhino rental car. The airport itself is located outside of the city in Mascot and having a car is the best way to navigate this vast continent. If you wish to see other Australian cities while there leave plenty of time. Sydney is situated in the south east corner of Australia and it takes 11 hours to get to Brisbane
to the north (Pacific Highway), while Melbourne is nine hours drive to the south west (Hume Highway).
This is a country in which Rhino’s unlimited mileage offer comes in handy. No visit to Sydney would be complete without going to the super sexy Bondi beach where people go to see and be seen, though watch out for the crushing breakers when the surf is up.
