"Twickenham is home to England’s iconic rugby stadium but hire a car and see what else it offers."

Twickenham is an attractive part of South London. Hiring a car here can take you to the world renowned Kew Gardens or to the semi-rural delights of Richmond Park. Many visitors come here to see England play rugby at the Twickenham Stadium. A museum there charts the history of the game and contains many artefacts from the England team’s exploits over more than a century.

Opposite Twickenham is a smaller stadium called ‘The Stoop’, home to premiership team Harlequins, so as a rugby fan you’ll be spoiled for choice.

Twickenham Mini Guide

Twickenham is a very old English settlement which has been inhabited right through the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman periods of history. Visitors who are interested in the past will find this a fascinating place to study with many old and beautiful buildings. Bizarrely enough a few of these buildings blew up in the 18th century as Twickenham was an English site for the manufacture of gun powder.

Some of the main roads in Twickenham are very old too such as York Road and it is interesting to drive along these and get a feel for the place. Another way to get a good sense of Twickenham is to park your car and take a walk along the banks of the River Thames around which the suburb is situated.

By the Victorian era Twickenham had become a very fashionable district and even today it is an extremely desirable part of London to live in with high house prices. Many people choose to live in Twickenham (which almost feels like being a countryside city) and commute into central London. With its tree lined roads and a varied mix of original shops and cafes, it has an atmosphere all of its own.

Do go to a rugby match at Twickenham stadium if you get the chance, but otherwise avoid driving when the games are on due to heavy traffic.
