The attraction of Kauai lies in its dramatic and beautiful scenery. The unspoilt nature has led to it featuring in many films including Jurassic Park and South Pacific. Hire a car and take a trip to Kanalei Valley from where you’ll see the bay known as Bali Hai in the film South Pacific.
If you can tear yourself away from the gorgeous beaches there, another great trip is through the sea caves of Na Pali National Park. The water in the caves is only knee deep and the caves are full of bats roosting above the iridescent waters.

Where is Lihu’e?
Lihu’e is the airport on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, famous as the setting for many Hollywood movies. The island is one of the most beautiful in Hawaii and has numerous national parks to tempt the tourist. The town itself is of little note, simply being a dormitory for the airport workers and those that work the fields nearby. The attraction lies in its easy access to the stunning coast and beautiful beaches.
It Sounds Idyllic. How do I get to Lihu’e?
Most flights arrive there from the west coast cities, the most important one being Los Angeles. There, many passengers make the connection from international flights. Hire car is essential if you don’t have an airport transfer booked but can also be very useful in exploring the rest of the island.
What’s the Airport Like?
It’s your typical tropical island laid back airport. Most of the airport’s business is done outside including ticketing, check in and security, not such a good idea in the rainy season but no one seems to mind. The airport doesn’t have a long runway so plane size is limited. You’ll find that the airport does look more like a smart hotel with covered walkways and with tropical plants in the gardens.
What can I Expect When I Arrive?
You’ll get the clichéd garland of flowers although these tend to be synthetic these days and sometimes a welcome drink – further comparisons to a hotel there! Baggage reclaim is under cover – just – and it’s a quick trip through security before you’re outside. The airport prides itself on its friendly welcome and smiles abound. Help is available from the Information Desk near the entrance if needed.
And on Departure?
There’s a small range of shops in the main lobby together with a café style restaurant and an outlet of Starbucks. The goods are limited to newspapers, flowers and a small travel essentials and gift shop. There’s no Wi-Fi facility at the airport as yet.
