La Guardia Airport Mini Guide

What can you Tell me About New York?
It’s one of the world’s best loved cities and appeared at number one in the list of cities people most wanted to visit. It’s home to the arts including the dazzle of Broadway plus the poignant history of 9/11 whose tragedy can best be remembered with a visit to Ground Zero. On a lighter note, there’s the beauty of Central Park in spring or Times Square on New Year’s Eve. Be in the city too on the 4th July for a memorable Independence Day celebration. Finally, try some of the mouth-watering food on offer in the city’s restaurants or on street corners; chilli dogs, deli sandwiches, New York pizza or baked vanilla cheesecake.

How do I get into New York?

New York has three main airports including JFK, Newark and La Guardia. La Guardia is the smallest of the three but still a substantial airport. It accepts mainly domestic flights and some international ones from the Caribbean and Canada. To access New York from the UK, it may be necessary to fly into another US airport and connect or to use Newark or JFK. The benefit of La Guardia is that it’s the closest to the centre of the city.

What is the Airport Like?
La Guardia is just over half the distance from the city centre compared to JFK and is found right on the water’s edge on Long Island. It has four terminals but almost certainly you’ll be entering via terminals B, C or D. AirTrain connects the terminals with each other and also to Newark and JFK.

What Can I Expect When I Land at La Guardia?
You’ll disembark onto the concourse via air bridges before passing through security and entering the baggage reclaim hall by using the elevators to the lower levels. Once through customs you’ll be in one of the three arrivals halls. These have all the airport services clearly signposted but for directions or other advice about the airport, ask at the information desk. The car rental companies have their desks in each arrivals hall and will shuttle you to collect your car from the rental parking lot. There are banks and ATMs in each of the terminals so obtaining cash shouldn’t be a problem. For other transport into the city, follow the signs or ask at the information desk for timetables and prices.

What About When I’m About to Leave New York?
The airport has reasonable but not extensive facilities for the departing passenger. If you need assistance getting through the airport’s procedures, let your airline know in advance so that a member of staff can be dedicated to your needs. A good handful of shops sell specialities such as New York souvenirs, sportswear and gifts and there is a duty free shop after security. The restaurants offer simple fare based on mass market tastes including Chinese, pizza, take away and bar food. There is the availability of Wi-Fi at the airport, payable at the terminals dotted around the airport.
