Indianapolis Airport Mini Guide

Why am I Going to Indianapolis?
You are may be going there as a motor racing fan as it’s the home of the world’s most famous motor race after Le Mans, the Indianapolis 500. The whole city gets ‘car fever’ during May as the tension builds and the world famous drivers arrive in town ready to take part. You could also be going there to see the country’s second tallest monument, the Soldier and Sailor’s Monument, only 15ft shorter than the Statue of Liberty. This monument marks the city’s stand against the slave trade and the sacrifice it made in the Civil War.

How Easy is it to Get to the City?
From across the US it’s very easy as there are flights from almost all major cities as well as flights from Cancun in Mexico and Toronto in Canada. If you’re coming in from Europe, you’ll need to catch a flight to either Washington or New York and take the connecting flight on Delta Airlines from there. The airport is close to the city and fast buses can get you there in less than fifteen minutes.

What is the Airport Like?
The new terminal, opened in 2006, is incredible. It is a masterpiece in steel and glass from the outside and a light and airy building from inside. It has a great range of facilities and is determined to expand further as the city promotes itself as a tourist destination.

What Should I do When I Land?
Upon arrival your plane will dock onto one of the airport concourses via an air bridge. From there it’s a short walk into security. After passing through the checkpoint, a display will tell you which baggage reclaim belt to get your suitcases from. You’ll need to go downstairs then to the appropriate belt before entering the arrivals hall. Against the wall to your left you’ll find the airport information desk, euphemistically called ‘Guest Services’. If you need any assistance whilst in the airport, that’s the place to ask. On this level too you’ll find all the transportation options including the car hire companies, bus companies and bus stops and the taxi firms. There are many banks and ATMs in the airport so getting dollars won’t be a problem. The journey into the city is quick and easy along the airport freeway so you’ll soon be in your downtown hotel.

And What can I do at the Airport on the day of my Departure?
After you’ve checked in you have a large range of shops both before and after security. These range from fashion to books and memorabilia to a travel spa outlet. You’ll have plenty to browse through but don’t forget to allow time for a meal at one of the airport’s twenty food outlets. Everything you could possibly want to eat is available there from sumptuous a la carte dining through to steakhouses, fast food and cafĂ© food including cakes and pastries. Once your shopping bags and tummies are full there might just be time to have a haircut at the airport barbers before settling down to check emails on the airport’s Wi-Fi system.
