A clear indication of how big the state of Texas is that although Austin is only the fourth biggest city in the state, it is the 14th largest city in the entire country. Although Austin was originally called Waterloo when it became capital of the Republic of Texas, it was renamed Austin after Stephen F. Austin. He was known as the father of Texas for playing a full role on the colonisation of the region.

Austin is the fourth largest city in Texas and was formally known as Waterloo before Texas congress formed a commission to find a site for the new capital. Austin was formed and was soon to become a thriving city. The city is split into seven districts each with their own unique flavour.
Downtown is the central business district and is home to some spectacular condo towers, which are the tallest in the state. The newest addition is the massive 360 Tower which can be seen from some distance. The Frost Bank Tower, built before 2005 still remains in the top ten tallest buildings in the city.
The Arboretum area located in north west Austin houses shopping malls and some very nice restaurants with something for everyone and the views from the riverfront at night are something to behold. The nightlife in the city is very vibrant and you will see people enjoy a glass of fine wine, while watching the world go by. They hold many cultural events there also, including the Austin City Limits Music Festival, which caters for every musical taste, young and old.
The Paramount Theatre, opened in 1915, is still running shows from way back when, to the present day. Getting around in Austin is primarily by bus, so to get the most of your stay, hiring a car is advised and then you can take in the surroundings at your own pace. Austin is steeped in historic culture and by visiting one of the many museums; you will get some idea why Austin is loved by many.
Austin’s only airport is, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, which is approximately eight kilometres to the south east of the city. So by arranging your car rental before you arrive it will let you enjoy this beautiful city at your own pace, ensuring you get the most from your visit.
