What Would Bring me to Austin?
Austin is the capital city of the state of Texas but not its largest city. It’s known as the capital of live music as it has more music venues per capita than anywhere else in the world. The city has a fantastic state capitol building clad in beautiful pink granite. The building there is actually taller than the national capitol building in Washington. Outside the city, the stunning countryside is great for a day out. From riding down the San Marcos River on an inner tube to hiking the trails around Town Lake, you’ll have the perfect time.
How do I get to Austin?
Austin-Bergstrom is the city’s entry airport and is five miles from the city centre. Last year over nine million passengers arrived in Austin through the airport. Almost all flights are domestic, apart from a flight from Cancun in Mexico. To get there from the UK you’d be best flying into Chicago, Washington or New York and catching the connecting flight. Getting into the city from the airport is quick and easy with the AirportFlyer shuttle bus being the best public transport option.

What can I Expect to Find on Arrival at Austin-Bergstrom?
A very modern airport welcomes you in from your plane along one of the air bridges and into the terminal. In keeping with the city’s reputation for live music, you’ll be intrigued by the sound of bands playing in the arrivals hall. There’s a permanent stage set up there and many bands give a musical welcome to the city. There is only a cursory check of passports as almost all flights are internal and then it’s off to collect luggage from the reclaim belts before heading out into the arrivals/concert hall!
The airport relies on volunteer ambassadors to man the information desks, seeing them as more reliable and better informed than general staff so if you need help, don’t be surprised if it’s a pensioner who’s on hand to supply it. If you need money in the airport, try one of the bank branches for currency exchange or an ATM for quick cash. The signs in the arrivals hall lead you quickly to the stop for public transport and the car rental companies whose offices are in the garage in a separate building opposite the main terminal doors.
What is the Airport Like for Departing Passengers?
The facilities are excellent. The Austiners love their food and want to share the experience with you for as long as they can. There’s a surfeit of eateries at the airport, all trying to outdo each other in good old Texan food. You’ll be eager to get your bags dropped off and tickets collected so that you can go and try some out. Don’t forget the shopping opportunities too with a dozen or more shops selling anything from fashion couture to books to NFL memorabilia. The airport is also kind enough to allow you half an hour of free Wi-Fi whilst in the airport!
