Albuquerque Airport, also known as Albuquerque International Sunport, is situated just 5 kilometres from the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. The airport handles around 6.5 million passengers every year and is the largest airport in the state. The airport first began operations in the 1930's and was substantially expanded in both the late 80's and in 1996. As a result the airport has increased its passenger numbers by 2% year on year since then.
The airport covers an area of 2,039 acres and handles its large demand through its four runways. There are approximately 520 flight operations every day. There is one terminal building which has two concourses and 23 gates. Many airlines have flights to and from Albuerque Airport including United Airlines,
Southwest Airlines, Aeromexico, Northwest Airlines, Us Airways and Delta.There is also a third concourse that is a computer check in for Great Lakes Airlines and New Mexico Airlines.
The Albuquerque Airport terminal has a unique look and was built in the style of Spanish-Pueblo architecture to reflect New Mexico culture. Reaching the airport by car is made very easy by following the signs and exits on Interstate 25 from both north and south approaches. Once you arrive at the airport there are facilities for short term and long term parking. The parking area is on a four level building that can cater for 3,400 vehicles for short time and 500 vehicles for long term. The area is patrolled by the airports aviation police for enhanced security. There are also specially allocated spaces close to the elevators for handicapped drivers.
