Mini Guide USA
Covering almost four million square miles, USA (United States of America) is the third largest country in the world in total area, land area and population. The USA is a federal constitutional republic made up 50 member states and a single federal district. The USA land mass is defined by the borders of Canada in the North, Alaska to the North West and Mexico to the south. The East coast is defined by the Atlantic Ocean and the West Coast by the Pacific Ocean. Although the USA is predominantly one single land mass there are a few exceptions such as the islands of Hawaii and the islands which make up the Caribbean.
Although the USA has a fairly short history, much has happened since its founding in July 4th 1776. Originally settled by the 13 colonies of Great Britain, independence was proclaimed following the American Revolutionary War. In 1787 the current United States Constitution defined the USA as a single republic of the central governing body. The Constitution was further amended in 1791 with the introduction of the Bill of Rights, which introduced 10 constitutional amendments designed to provide citizens with more freedom and greater civil rights.
The USA is a truly diverse mixture of cultures, there is no real definition of "American", instead a whole variety of cultural influences are melded together to form what we term "American culture". Depending upon which region of the USA you are visiting you will find a whole myriad of influencing cultures including Scottish, German, Irish, Dutch, English, African, Hispanic and a whole host of other minor influences.
