The city of Tunis is fascinating in itself but many visitors travel there to see the remains of one of the world’s greatest empires – Carthage. Found just outside Tunis and near the airport, you’ll need to book a trip or alternatively pick up a hire car and a guide and tour the city at your leisure.
The remains are well preserved and the museum in the city has a marvellous display of artefacts from the site, despite it being almost completely destroyed by the Romans at the end of the Punic Wars.
