Whilst you might be staying in Launceston itself, many of its attractions are found outside the city. You’ll need a hire car to reach many of them including The Tamar Island Wetlands Centre where you can discover the importance of the wetland area to conservation plans and hike out to the bird hides for a closer look at the residents.
Another popular visit is to Cataract Gorge where you can swim in the clear but cold waters of the gorge or cross it in a chair lift before walking back across one of two bridges that span the gorge.

How do I get There?
You can fly into Launceston Airport from five cities on Australia’s east coast and from other airports in Tasmania.
Melbourne is the most popular route, so if you are travelling outside Tasmania, you would probably find yourself there. Flights are also available from
Sydney.
Can I get to the Town Easily?
You can take a taxi from the airport or use the Airporter shuttle bus service. If you have a hire car it is an easy drive using the Midland Highway and you can pick up your keys from the car hire desks near the baggage claim area at the airport.
What Facilities Does the Airport Have?
Launceston Airport has the basic facilities you need at any airport. There are two ATMs if you run out of dollars and you can go to News Travels for newspapers and snacks or any last minute items you forgot. If you get hungry, have a latte and a sandwich at Hudson’s Coffee or a beer and a bar snack at the Long Bar and Café. If you have a business class ticket, you can use the Qantas Club Lounge and relax in comfort or catch up on work, before your flight.
What is There to see in the Town?
Cataract Gorge is Launceston’s most famous attraction – you can hike or swim or just kick back and enjoy this area of natural beauty. Look out for the peacocks and wildlife and take a chairlift across the gorge, if you are feeling brave! Take a river cruise through the gorge and along the Tamar River and have a light lunch on board and try some local wines.
Out and About
Visit the towns of Evandale and Longford, they have an old 19th century village feel to them and there are craft shops and antique shops to explore.
