What can you Tell me About Valladolid?
It’s a bit of an unusual city with some unusual sights. It was the home to Spain’s greatest writer and poet, Miguel de Cervantes who wrote ‘Don Quixote’. If you have the time whilst in the city you can visit his house which is now set up as a museum to the master. One of the unusual places to visit is the Museum of Polychrome Woodcarving! In plain English it means there are lots of statues and artefacts carved and inlaid with different coloured pieces of wood. It sounds dull but it’s fascinating. Another unusual sight is the cathedral, if only for the tower that should be there but isn’t as the architect was called away for another project and it wasn’t completed!
How do I get to Valladolid?
Whilst many people arrive in Valladolid by train from Madrid, the city does have its own airport less than fifteen minutes away. A shuttle bus operates from there to the city centre at regular intervals throughout the day. Currently there are several companies providing flights to Valladolid with Ryanair the largest operator. However, due to a dispute with the Spanish government, the Ryanair flights, including the only flight from the UK, may cease at the end of October.
What is the Airport Like?
It’s small and a little dated and if Ryanair do pull out, the conditions there are likely to deteriorate. The building looks better on the outside than inside.
And What can I Expect When I Arrive at Valladolid?
To begin with, there’s the walk to the terminal from the aircraft steps as there aren’t any air bridges there. If you’re going to have trouble with the walk you need to let your airline know well in advance so they can organise assistance for you at the airport. After entering the terminal building, passports are checked quickly as most of the flights are internal. You can then collect your suitcases before entering the arrivals hall. The airport help desk is over near the check in points so if you need help on orientation in the airport that’s where you’ll need to go.
There is a banking kiosk with ATMs in the middle of the hall floor and if you’re looking for where to collect your pre-booked hire car, you can almost miss the company desks as they are immediately to your left as you exit customs. For bus transfers into Valladolid, you must buy your tickets from the machines in the arrivals hall. You won’t be allowed to board without a ticket.
What About on the day of my Departure?
Make sure you take something with you to do and to eat for the choices there are limited. There’s a shop selling all you’ll need for your journey before security and a branch of the same company after security selling the typical duty free products. There is only one food outlet before security selling hot and cold snacks and a scaled down version of it in the departure lounge if you need a drink. For entertainment for those with a laptop or netbook, there is an airport-wide Wi-Fi zone available for a pay per use fee.
