La Coruna Airport Car Hire - Did You Know?

  • Most flights are from Iberian airports although seasonal flights operate from London Heathrow, Amsterdam and Paris.
  • Over a million passengers use the airport to access the Coruna region – book a hire car and join them.
  • Because of its geographical location, the building of the airport was difficult as weather conditions had to be taken into account in the orientation of the runways.

La Coruna Airport Mini Guide

La Coruna is a Large Industrial City, Why Would I Want to Holiday There?
That’s one aspect of the city but there are plenty of reasons for a short break there. It’s a major cruise ship destination with over sixty ships docking there last year. It has archaeology including the Roman Pillar of Hercules, a lighthouse that has been in operation for almost 1,900 years – a record for a lighthouse. The city hall is also an impressive building sprawling decadently over one side of the main square. There are also the Orzan and Riazor beaches of the city reached along the six mile promenade.  There, despite being close to the city, the beaches are relaxing with golden sand and clear but admittedly chilly water.

How do I get to La Coruna?
The city has its own airport, four miles from the city centre, receiving mostly domestic flights although the airline Vueling offers flights from London, Amsterdam and Paris. From the airport it’s a cheap bus or taxi fare into the city and to one of the plush hotels that line the promenade.

What’s the Airport Like?
It’s ultra-modern on the exterior with a stone cubic building joining sleekly onto a glass building of the same proportions. Inside it’s spacious and with walls that, in places, make it resemble some huge temple. Passenger numbers have been increasing rapidly in line with tourism to the city and further expansion and upgrades are planned.

What Can I Expect When I Arrive at the Airport?
If you’re lucky, your plane will use one of the recently installed air bridges to disembark you. After getting through passport control and collecting your bags you’ll be out in the arrivals hall. If you get lost or need any information, look out for the yellow and black sign over the triangular desk in the centre of the hall opposite the check-in desks. If you’ve arranged car hire you’ll find the desks in the far left hand corner of arrivals as you exit customs. Public transport into the city is available including local buses and taxis and the information desk can give you advice on routes, fares and schedules. There are three banks in the airport with their own ATMs so exchanging or obtaining money shouldn’t be a problem.

And When I Return Home?
Drop off your bags at the check-in desk and collect you boarding passes then you can spend some time in the three shops before security. Divers has a range of goods for sale for the traveller, all in the same store. For last minute gifts visit Juegas Celtas which has a nice range of handicrafts whilst for food, there is a delicatessen, although be careful to check what foodstuffs you can export. After shopping you can enjoy a real treat by heading up to the Medas Restaurant on the first floor where, whilst watching the plans take off and land, you can enjoy a typical Galician meal in a modern attractive environment. After security you have a small duty free store together with a snack bar/cafeteria for last minute drinks and before you know it, your gate number will be called.
