Cinisi is a quiet village whose life is based on dairy produce and olives. In the 17th century, Benedictine friars sought permission to build the town on the remains of an earlier settlement from the 14th century. Their efforts can still be seen today in the parts of the Benedictine court, the towers of Pozzilo and Mulinazzo.

If you hire a car you can visit the home of the poet Giovanni Meli who went there first as the village doctor and then as a poet who was inspired by the location.

Cinisi Mini Guide

Tell me About Cinisi
Cinisi is a pretty seaside town in the Palermo region of Sicily. The town’s name comes from the Arabic ‘gins’ meaning ghosts or spirits. It was home to Sicilian poet Giovanni Meli who was inspired by the scenery. Peppino Impastato also lived there – he was an activist who fought against the mafia and it cost him his life.

How Would I get There?
Palermo Airport is just 10km away, so hiring a car or taking a taxi is the best option. Trenitalia has a train service that connects Italy with Sicily and AST buses run throughout the island.

What can I see in Cinisi?
The Church of Santa Fara is worth visiting to see the altar decorated with corals and lapis-lazuli and the wooden carved statues of the saints. Beneath the church there are underground passages of the old necropolis - crucifixes, medals and coins were found here. Visit the Benedictine Monastery with its 2 lookout towers and 18th century painted wooden ceilings. Torre Pozzillo is one of the 3 watch towers that you can visit, they previously defended the town against enemy attack.

History is not my Thing, What Else can I do?
Head for Magaggiari Beach and relax or swim or if you want to be more active, hike on one of the nature trails close by. See the natural beauty of the Valley of Furi, there you will find the Fountain of Accitella and the Piano Margi.

What’s the Food Like?
Try some of the best in Sicilian cuisine at the highly recommended Ristorante Trattoria Andre il Pirata. Seafood is a speciality, try the spaghetti vongole or the stuffed squid.

Are There any Special Events?
The town is mostly known for its huge carnival parade in February, where the papier mache floats are made by the locals and it attracts visitors from all across the island. In June or July, a festival is held in honour of Santa Fara, the town’s patron saint. If you like your food, go to Cinisi in May when the Ricotta Festival is on and you can taste the best of the local produce including olives and nuts or carob and peaches.

Where can I Stay for a few Days?
The Magaggiari Hotel and Resort has 4 stars and all the facilities you could want. It is set in gardens with a swimming pool and tennis courts. A business centre is available for internet access or use the Wi-Fi access for a small charge. The hotel has its own restaurant and bar and there is a small shop for gifts and snacks.

Picked the car up from Europcar and it was what we had booked. The guy at the desk was helpful and gave us maps and also recommended a few places worth visiting.
